What skin conditions require diagnosis and treatment?

The CDC recommends seeking diagnosis and/or treatment if you are experiencing ongoing symptoms described below (or have experienced a rash, lesion, or bite that appears to be worsening despite topical treatment)

Acne
What is it?

Acne is a skin condition caused by clogged hair follicles from dead skin cells, excess oil, or bacteria. Without treatment, it can continue to worsen in severity, and lead to infection or even permanent scarring.

How common is it?

Acne is the 8th most common disease worldwide, with over 85% of people experiencing acne at some point in their lives.

Who's at risk?

While most common in teenagers, 50% of women and over 40% of men reported experiencing acne in and beyond their 20s.

What are common symptoms?

Small red bumps, white or blackhead pimples, and general skin redness around eruptions, most common on the face forehead, cheat, upper back and shoulders.

Common myths:
  • Dirty skin causes acne (over cleaning can make it worse)

  • Popping pimples is good for acne

  • Acne is contagious

  • Acne will eventually go away on its own

Eczema
What is it?

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a chronic, non-contagious inflammatory skin condition.

How common is it?

Eczema affects up to 15 million people in the United States alone, and over 245 million people globally. 1 in 10 people will develop eczema during their lifetime.

Who's at risk?

Eczema affects both men and women equally, and is more common among people who have a family history or eczema, asthma, or other allergies. It most commonly starts in childhood.

What are common symptoms?

Red, itchy rashes, most commonly inside the elbows and behind the knees. If left untreated, it can lead to thickening of the skin, rough, cracked skin, or even bacterial infection.

Common myths:
  • Only children get eczema (it can occur at any age)

  • Scratching ezcema spots is ok

  • Eczema is contagious

  • Eczema can be seasonal and goes away on its own

Psoriasis
What is it?

Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune disease that speeds the growth of skin cells. If left untreated, psoriasis can lead to more serious conditions including arthritis, cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes.

How common is it?

Psoriasis affects between 2-3% of the US population, and close to 125m people worldwide.

Who's at risk?

Psoriasis can occur in anyone, and is slightly more prevalent among Caucasians. It equally affects both men and women, and more commonly starts in late adolescence and adulthood.

What are common symptoms?

Discoloration of the skin, itchy and painful red patches with white scaling, most frequently on the outside of the elbows and knees, or scalp.

Common myths:
  • Psoriasis is contagious

  • Psoriasis is just dry skin

  • Psoriasis is caused by poor hygeine

  • Psoriasis and eczema are basically the same (they actually require significantly different treatments)

  • Psoriasis never goes away (it's not totally curable, but we can reduce the frequency, duration, and severity of symptoms)

What does care look like?

Why skincare matters

It's your largest organ

Skin makes up almost 15% of a person’s weight. It is the immune system’s first line of defense against infection, and interacts with nearly every other organ and system that works to keep us healthy.

Skin conditions can be a warning sign

Because of its key role in your body’s immune system, changes to your skin can often be an early indicator of undiagnosed health issues, where early diagnosis and treatment can have the greatest impact.

Healthy skin is a keystone of overall health

With countless interrelationships to your body’s other systems, changes to your skin can often be related to seasonal, chronic, or other complex conditions. By making skincare a part of your health plan, you are more likely to catch early symptoms and find effective treatments.

Don't take our word for it.

We are trusted by over 50,000 patients every month. Here's what they have to say.

I found an amazing provider who has helped me more in the last few months than a team of specialists over the course of nearly a decade of care.

Valentin

My care provider is phenomenal and the ability to book appointments and complete them online is so convenient.

Dora

I'm having a great experience with Circle Medical. They schedule appointments quickly, show up to the video calls on time and take your issues seriously. I feel heard. My treatment is working! Looking forward to continuing to work with Circle.

Erin

I get to decide my provider. Tons of appointments that are days away instead of weeks. Well-designed app. Medical/appointment notes are all in one location instead of spread around or buried in menus. Everything got done without any bumps or pushback or bs. I've never *ever* had such a painless experience.

Stacy

My provider was very caring and easy to deal with. She spent more time with me than any doctor I've had in the past decade. Highly recommended.

Keagan

It’s just easy for a working mom in between calls when I have about 20 mins or so to actually care for myself and my health right from home.

Jess

This has been the most helpful medical resource I’ve discovered. Quality providers, good service and factual conversation. I am very pleased.

Marlee

The efficiency of not having to go to an office and the flexible hours are great!

Tina

Circle is the only part of the healthcare value chain that doesn't waste my time and money.

Patrick

Very convenient. I was shocked that I could get inexpensive mental health services so quickly. Very pleased.

I like my provider and the ease of appointments at home is great.

Cale

Cuts out the wait of waiting rooms and traffic, Have met with multiple providers when certain ones aren’t available and all have been very knowledgeable, positive and helpful. I really do think Circle Medical is the thing of the future.

Laurel

I work odd hours and having remote access to healthcare make it so much easier so I don’t have to call off work or leave work.

Christian

Great service and caring doctors.

Eric

The ease and quick turnaround for an appointment is addressing a dire strain on the current infrastructure of healthcare (one of which they refuse to address). My provider was also unlike any healthcare provider that I’ve met. She was nonjudgmental, kind, and not only advocated for informed consent, but her actions aligned with it. This is the future for healthcare and it is about time.

Sarah

Easy access, no run around. Blown off by at least 3 different doctors before finding Circle and my diagnosis/treatment has immensely improved my life.

Micaela

Very easy platform to use, providers are knowledgable, easy to make appointments that fit in my busy schedule.

Madelyn

My provider was amazing. She listened to what I had to say, she explained everything in detail so I understood, and she truly cared about me.

Kathy

I have a great working relationship with my provider. It is really easy to get care and feel cared for even on a virtual meeting.

Garrett

This app met me on my level for my neurodivergent needs, didn't keep me waiting, and has really kind and professional medical staff.

Kanesha

The provider I spoke to was much more helpful than I expected. Instead of telling me what I thought I wanted to hear, she told me what I NEEDED to hear.

Kierra

Access is convenient, and good experience with clinician.

Samantha

I have recommended you to several people. I really like Circle Medical because I don't feel judged and feel that I am actually cared about.

Shalane

The convenience is amazing. I can always find an appointment with the same person at a time that works best for my schedule. Also, I love the ability to text questions whenever I want. I get answers within the same day. Sometimes in an hour. It feels like a concierge service. I can call whenever I want. Make an appointment when I want, and get quick answers to all of my questions.

Circle Medical Team members care about their patients, provide outstanding services, and deliver services timely and efficiently.

This is the first practice in over a decade where I actually felt heard. Advocating for yourself can be hard when you’ve had other practitioners who are dismissive and condescending. This practice is the complete opposite and a much needed breath of fresh air.

The help I've received has been absolutely fantastic. The person who did my testing was friendly, polite, and obviously very talented. Made me feel safe to be able to open up and talk about my issues, and left me feeling very validated and heard.

Peyton

I could not believe that I got an appointment for ADHD within hours. I had a terrible time trying to get an appointment with the group my insurance recommended. The health practitioner is knowledgeable and kind, and I feel like I'm getting both good physical and psychological support.

TJ

I feel like I was listened to and recieved a proper diagnosis and treatment. Also very convenient.

Katherine

Quick and easy especially if you're super busy with life and work to make a appointment to go some where and see a provider... this is a life changer for me.

Frequently Asked

Skincare appointments

What can I expect in first my appointment?

During your appointment, your provider will conduct a full evaluation of your skin concerns. If you have recently experienced skin changes, your provider will be able to help you diagnose the underlying causes and start you on a treatment that is right for you.

Do I need an in-person appointment for skin care evaluation?

Our approach to skin care management is to provide better access to high quality providers through video appointments and in-app chat, so you can get support whenever you need it.

Why shouldn't I just see a dermatologist?

At Circle Medical, our board certified primary care providers have been trained in a generalized approach to medicine and are comfortable treating a wide array of skin conditions, including acne, rashes, eczema, and psoriasis, to name a few. Also your Circle Medical primary care provider can also order blood work and help to treat any underlying conditions that may also be present. However, if your Circle Medical provider feels that a dermatologist would be helpful for your skin condition, they can provide a referral to a dermatologist to help make the process seamless.

How often do I need to have appointments?

Your specific appointment frequency depends on your individual care plan. If this is a new diagnosis for you, you may have more frequent appointments with your provider to allow room for modifications to your care plan based on what is working. Patients who have already been placed on an effective skin care regimen and are focused on maintenance typically see their providers less frequently; about once every 3-6 months. We encourage you to discuss appointment frequency with your provider during your initial appointment if you have questions.
If you are experiencing severe health concerns, please dial 911 or visit your nearest emergency room.

How long will it take to see results / improve my skin appearance and health?

Your provider will create a custom treatment plan for you based on your needs. Depending on your treatment plan and your specific underlying causes, the amount of time it takes to see results and improvements will vary.

How can I prepare for my first appointment?

Please make sure you’re in a quiet place where you feel comfortable talking with your healthcare provider. Also, to assist your provider in a telehealth skin exam, please make sure you are in an area with proper lighting and good Wifi. This will allow your provider to perform a proper skin evaluation.

Can my provider refer me to a skin specialist if needed?

Yes, all of our providers are board certified primary care providers who can not only evaluate your skin but also order blood work, place referrals, perform wellness exams, and assist with medical screenings as needed.

Do Circle Medical providers only treat skin?

No, all of our providers are board certified primary care providers who can not only evaluate your skin but also order blood work, place referrals, perform wellness exams, and assist with medical screenings as needed.

General

What if I need in-person testing or examinations?

If any in-person care is needed, such as bloodwork, vaccinations, or other testing, our providers are able to send the appropriate request to a nearby lab. Results will be integrated with our HIPAA-compliant mobile app so that patients have access to all of their medical records in one secure place.

What states do you operate in?

To see our list of currently available states, begin booking an appointment.

You must be currently residing in the state of treatment as well as have your primary pharmacy be in that same state in order to be a patient at our practice.

How long are the appointments?

The first intake appointment is 30 minutes. Follow-up appointments are 20 minutes each.

Billing

How do I know how much my specific appointment will cost?

We provide a cost estimate when you are booking your appointment. For those with insurance, your actual cost is determined after we submit the insurance claim for your appointment. Once we submit the claim, insurance companies will pay for a portion of the appointment and pass on any remaining cost to you. Once we know what this cost is, we will update you with an invoice within the app.

When do I get charged for my appointment?

For those with insurance, it typically takes 1-3 weeks for the insurance claim to be processed. Once processed, we’ll send you an invoice within the app with any remaining costs. You can then opt to pay through the app, or we will automatically charge the payment card on file after 48 hours of sending you the invoice.

For those without insurance (or with out of network insurance), we will send you the invoice 1-2 days after your appointment is completed. You can then opt to pay through the app, or we will automatically charge the payment card on file after 48 hours of sending you the invoice.

Insurance

What insurance do you accept?

We accept over 1,500+ insurance plans. We cover most of the major PPO insurance companies (payors) across the United States. The best way to confirm coverage of your insurance plan is to begin booking an appointment on our website or via our mobile app. During the booking process, you’ll be prompted to enter your insurance information for a real-time verification of your insurance plan.

What if I am having issues verifying my insurance plan coverage?

The best way to confirm your insurance plan coverage is to call the Member Services phone number on the back of your insurance card. If needed, you can reference our Tax ID#: 474883537 and our NPI: 1134596091. Once you are able to confirm your coverage and your primary care copay costs, you can use the in-app chat to message our team with the information. We’ll then follow up with confirmation.

What is the total cost of diagnosis and treatment?

Your per-appointment costs are set by your insurance plan. If the costs seem high, you may be on a high deductible health plan (HDHP). This means that you have an annual out-of-pocket amount that you must pay on healthcare in a given year before your insurance plan will cover more of your per-appointment costs.

If you are on an HDHP and have confirmed your insurance information in our mobile app, your remaining deductible for the year will be displayed on the “Book Appointment” page. Note that this amount may be outdated if you have had recent insurance claims processed.

Common skin conditions

Numerous skin conditions can be diagnosed and addressed through your primary care provider or dermatologist. Below are some of the most common skin conditions:

Acne

  • Acne is a skin condition caused by excessive sebum production. This can lead to blocked pores which cause blackheads, whiteheads and pimples. Acne can sometimes be worsened by stress, changes in hormones and certain medications. Acne can be managed by lifestyle modifications, skincare routines or prescription medications.

Eczema

  • Eczema, or atopic dermatitis, is a chronic skin condition that is characterized by inflamed, itchy patches on the skin. Symptoms and flare-ups can be managed by identifying triggers and through medication, though there is no definitive cure.

Psoriasis

  • Psoriasis is a skin condition where areas of the skin overproduce skin cells, leading to a buildup on the surface. This can lead to scaly and itchy patches on the skin. Psoriasis is usually managed through topicals and sometimes prescription medications.

Rashes

  • Rashes can appear on the body as changes in the color or texture of your skin. They may sometimes be itchy, bumpy, red, scaly or even blistered. Rashes can often be brought on by allergies, but they can also be a result of heat exposure, infection or certain medical conditions. To treat a rash, your health care provider will need to determine the root cause.

Rosacea

  • Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that primarily appears on the face. Symptoms may include flushed, sensitive or dry skin. Rosacea can be aggravated by spicy food, weather, alcohol and stress. Rosacea can be managed with topical treatments, medications and avoidance of triggers.

Dry Skin

  • Many people experience dry skin. Dry skin typically appears in winter, but it can pose year-round problems for some people. It is characterized by tight, dull or rough skin. Dry skin can be aggravated by weather conditions and certain health conditions. Some people may also just naturally have dry skin. Remedies typically include hydrating lotions, avoidance of skincare that dries out the skin and lifestyle changes.

Dermatitis

  • Dermatitis refers to an array of skin conditions that cause skin irritation or swelling. Contact dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis and atopic dermatitis are the three most common types of dermatitis. Management of dermatitis typically involves avoiding triggers, moisturizing or topical ointments.

Hives

  • Hives are itchy, red welts that can occur anywhere on the body. They typically appear after being exposed to an allergen or extreme temperatures. Hives typically disappear on their own but may need to be treated with antihistamines if they persist or recur often. Immediate medical care will be required if an allergic reaction is accompanied by difficulties breathing.

Shingles

  • Shingles is a condition triggered by the same virus that causes chickenpox. It is characterized by a painful rash that can occur on the body or face. Shingles has no cure, but antiviral medications can help with the healing process. There is also a preventative vaccine that may prevent shingles and reduce the severity of the condition if you do get it. It’s important to reach out to your health care provider if you have shingles to minimize complications.

& More!

  • Skin conditions can be varied and complicated. Although this list covers some of the most common conditions, there are many more out there. If you have a skin concern, make an appointment with a Circle Medical primary care provider for a diagnosis and treatment!

When should you see a primary care physician for skin problems?

Some skin conditions like dry skin can easily be managed at home, but when should you seek care from a primary care provider? Generally, you should seek care if a skin condition persists for more than a week or two. Also, you may need to seek care sooner if the skin condition is accompanied by other symptoms.

Primary care providers are trained to diagnose and treat a range of common skin conditions. Your primary care provider may refer you to a dermatologist if the skin condition is out of their scope of expertise or if your condition continues to persist or worsen after treatment.
